What It Protects

Engine oil pan

The lowest point under the front of most trucks and the one that ends the day when it is holed. Oil loss at speed can take the engine with it.

Transmission

The pan and case are exposed on the underside and are not designed to take direct impact.

Transfer case

Sits behind the transmission and hangs low on four-wheel-drive trucks. A cracked case leaks fluid and strands you.

Replacing thin stamped steel with thick plate turns the vulnerable stretch of the underbody into a continuous sliding surface, so the truck rides over an obstacle instead of catching a component on it.

Does this bolt to factory mounting points?

Yes. No drilling or cutting. The kits use the existing factory locations.

Will it fit with an aftermarket bumper?

On several platforms, yes — those kits are offered in a stock-skid-plate version and an aftermarket-bumper version. Pick the one matching your truck.

How much clearance does it cost?

A skid plate adds material below the chassis, so there is a small trade. The gain is that a low point becomes a surface the truck slides across rather than a component that catches and breaks.

Can I still change the oil with it fitted?

Access varies by platform. Check the product page for your vehicle — service access is a design consideration on these kits, but the details differ between trucks.
