Gen 2 Raptor Performance: What to Buy First

A deliberately short collection, and a buying order for the 2017–2020 Ford Raptor.

On a Gen 2 the real-world gains come from suspension and from being able to stop — not from chasing horsepower on a truck that already has plenty. Here is how we would spend it.

The Order We Would Spend It In

Most Gen 2 owners ask what the best performance upgrade is. The answer is almost never the one people expect, so here is the whole order.

1. Bump stops and limit straps

The cheapest change on this list and the one that alters how the truck feels most per dollar. A bump stop controls the last few inches of compression; a limit strap controls the end of extension. Get them wrong and you either slam the frame on big hits or let the suspension droop past what the joints were designed for. Almost everyone skips this and goes straight to shocks. See Shocks & Bump Stops.

2. Arms and tie rods

Billet upper arms, fabricated lower arms and billet tie rods. The factory tie rod is the part that bends first once you run a bigger tire, and a bent tie rod is an alignment that walks and eventually a steering failure. See Gen 2 Suspension.

3. Brakes

The Alcon Big Brake Kit (front) for the 2017–2018 Raptor is the single most worthwhile bolt-on performance upgrade on a Gen 2 running 35s or larger. Heavy truck, real speed, factory brakes that fade long before the truck runs out of capability. See Raptor Brake Kits.

4. A mid travel or long travel front kit

The biggest change available, and the most expensive. This is where a Gen 2 stops being a fast truck and starts being a desert truck. See Suspension Kits.

5. Power

Last, honestly. A Gen 2 is not short of power for what its chassis can put down on dirt.

What Is Listed Here

  • Alcon Big Brake Kit (front), 2017–2018 Ford Raptor — the one bolt-on performance part in this collection. Alcon is an OE-level motorsport brake manufacturer and it is what we specified for our own race program.
  • 2017 Ford Raptor Race Truck — the Gen 2 development vehicle behind a great deal of what we sell for these trucks, and available as a turnkey program.

If you came here looking for tunes, intakes or intercoolers, see the FAQ below.

Gen 2 Performance FAQs

Why is there no tuning or intercooler listed here?

Because that is not what we manufacture. Foutz Motorsports is a suspension and chassis shop — we build arms, geometry and armour. We do resell performance parts from other manufacturers, including intercooler kits, and our shop does engine work as part of a full build; not all of it is listed online. Call (480) 718-9800 and tell us what you are after.

What is the single best performance upgrade for a Gen 2 Raptor?

Suspension. A mid travel or long travel front kit changes what the truck can do far more than any power adder. Brakes come next. If the budget is small, bump stop and limit strap control comes before either.

Is the Alcon kit available for 2019-2020 trucks?

The kit listed here is for the 2017–2018 Raptor. Ford made changes across the Gen 2 run. Call us with your year. For Gen 3 trucks there is a separate Alcon kit for 2021 and up.

Do I need a rear brake kit too?

Front-only is a common and effective upgrade — roughly 70 percent of braking work happens at the front. A matched rear kit balances the system for trucks that see sustained high-speed use. Both front and rear are listed in Raptor Brake Kits.

Can I buy the race truck?

It is a turnkey program rather than a parts listing, and the conversation is about what you want to run. We also do arrive-and-drive, which is the lower-commitment route into desert racing. Call us.

Shipping

What countries do you ship to?

We currently ship to the United States, and Canada. To enquire about shipping to a different destination, please contact us. We can assist you with finding a shipping broker to ship products to other US friendly countries.

How long will it take to receive my order?

Standard shipping normally takes 3-5 days after it leaves our facility. Next day shipping is available on all domestic orders (for an additional charge). International shipping times depend on the products and destination (estimated at checkout). Products we have in stock at the time of order normally ship within 48 hours. Products not in stock can take 4-6 weeks depending on production. Consult your customer service representative for details on product stock and how quickly an item can ship to you.

Are Products in stock or built to order?

We try to maintain reasonable stock of all of our Foutz Motorsports manufactured parts but sometimes we will run short and have to manufacture more to fill orders. Some items we only build to stock due to complexity of a kit or sometimes higher cost items would be built to order. Best to consult your sales representative for details on what we have on hand before placing your order. Normally production time runs up to about 4-6 weeks for any items that we dont have on hand.
