The rear differential skid is first on any truck that leaves pavement. The diff sits low, it is directly in line with whatever the rear tires roll over, and the housing is cast — cast iron does not bend, it cracks. A holed cover or a cracked housing means fluid on the trail, a tow, and a rebuild.

After that it depends on terrain. Rocks argue for the full underbody kit, because a single hard hit on the oil pan or transfer case ends the trip. Fast dirt argues for the rear shock skids, because a dented shock body means the piston no longer moves cleanly and that shock is finished.

The lower control arm skids matter most on a truck still running factory arms, since the stock arm is the part that takes the hit before anything stronger is fitted.

Do I need skid plates if my Raptor already has them from the factory?

The factory plates protect the engine and front differential to a point. They do not cover the rear differential, the rear shock mounts or the lower control arms, which is where most of the real damage happens on a truck that sees rocks and whoops.

Will skid plates cause overheating?

No. These are designed with airflow and drainage in mind and do not seal off the underside of the truck.

Do the lower arm skids fit fabricated arms?

The lower control arm skid plate kit listed here is for the stock arm. If you are running Foutz fabricated lower arms, check the product page for the correct version.

How much do they weigh?

Weight is listed on each product page. Aluminum construction keeps it reasonable, but a full underbody kit is not a light part.
