Billet Top Hat Showdown: Standard vs. Heavy Duty - Foutz Motorsports

Billet Top Hat
Showdown:
Standard vs. Heavy Duty

Your factory top hat has a rubber bushing that's waiting to fail — especially under aftermarket springs. We built two billet solutions to fix that. Here's how to pick the right one for your rig.

⚠ The Problem with Your Stock Top Hat

Ford's OEM front shock top hat relies on a rubber bushing as its primary load-bearing mount. Under abuse — or even just with aftermarket coil springs — that bushing fails. When it does, your shock can drop completely out of the spring bucket, causing cascading damage to other suspension components. Both of our billet solutions eliminate this weak link entirely.

At Foutz Motorsports, we've been modifying F150s and Raptors since we built the very first Raptor to race the Baja 1000 back in 2009. We know exactly where these trucks break — and we engineer solutions that hold up in the real world. Our two F150 billet top hat kits share the same DNA: CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminum, FK uniballs, 17-4 stainless steel spacers, and 12mm studs sized for your 2015–2025 F150 shock towers. Both maintain factory ride height with no lift added.

So what sets them apart? One word: intensity. Read on to find out which kit matches how you use your truck.

Breaking Down the Heavy Duty Difference

The standard Billet Top Hat is an outstanding upgrade from the OEM rubber-bushed mount — it eliminates the primary failure point and gives you a precision-machined, uniball-equipped solution that can handle aggressive trail driving and progressive aftermarket coil springs. For most F150 owners hitting dirt roads, moderate trails, or running aftermarket coils on the street, it's everything you need.

But if you're chasing the limits of what your F150's front suspension can handle, the Heavy Duty kit was engineered specifically for that use case. The jump from a 3/4" standard FK uniball to a 7/8" wide-series FK WSSX14T isn't just a small size increase — the wider bearing provides significantly more surface area on the ball, which translates directly to load capacity and longevity under repeated high-force impacts.

The threaded top retainer is the other innovation worth highlighting. On the standard kit, the uniball is pressed in place with a ring clip — which works great for normal use. Under sustained hard-core abuse, however, that ring clip can work loose, allowing the bearing to shift. The Heavy Duty version solves this with a top cap that threads directly into the main body and is locked in place with four stainless Allen screws. It simply cannot back out.

The Bottom Line on Uniball Strength

The FK WSSX14T uniball used in the Heavy Duty kit features 17-4 stainless steel races and a 400-series stainless steel ball — the strongest combination available in FK's lineup. Combined with the larger 7/8" diameter and the wide-series design that maximizes surface contact, this bearing has nearly double the overall strength rating of the standard 3/4" unit. That margin matters when you're landing off-camber hits in a loaded truck.

Which One Is Right for You?

Standard Billet Top Hat — $499
You want to eliminate the OEM rubber bushing failure risk
You've installed aftermarket coil springs and need a stronger mount
You do moderate off-roading — trails, gravel, occasional dirt blasts
You want FOX orange, black, or raw anodized looks at a great price
You want a fully serviceable, replaceable uniball design
Heavy Duty Billet Top Hat — $629
You run hard on rough terrain — whoops, rock crawling, desert bashing
You want the absolute maximum strength available for an F150 top hat
You're running aggressive progressive springs with heavy preload
Long-term bearing longevity matters — you don't want to service it often
You want confidence the top retainer won't ever back out under abuse

Built from Race-Proven Experience

Both kits include six M12 × 1.5 × 40 studs and four pivot spacers. Both are designed to maintain your factory ride height with no lift — just a straight swap of the weak OEM mount for a billet solution that belongs in a race truck. And if you're not sure which kit fits your build, call us — our team has more hands-on experience with F150 and Raptor suspension than anyone else on the planet.

One important note for both kits: the uniball is a wear item, designed to be serviced. The Standard kit uses the FK FKS12T replacement uniball; the Heavy Duty uses the FK WSSX14T. Both are available directly through our service parts catalog.
